Oven-Braised Beer Brats with Caramelized Onions and Apples

Inspired by cooking and sausage stew flavors with a hearty twist

Introduction

Join the world of easy cooking recipes with this One‑Pan Oven‑Braised Beer Brats recipe that’s all about bold flavor. Brats are braised in beer alongside sweet caramelized onions and tender apples—delivering the same comfort as a classic beef stew recipe, but in a delicious bratwurst format. Perfect for cozy dinners, game day spread, or serving guests with minimal effort.

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

  • 5–6 bratwurst sausages (your favorite variety)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 apples (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar (optional)
  • 1 tsp whole grain or Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1 (12 oz) bottle lager-style beer or ale
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) — an easy step in any cooking recipes workflow.
  2. Sear the brats: Heat oil in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Brown bratwursts on all sides for 6–8 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
  3. Caramelize onions & apples: In the same pan, stir in onions and cook ~5 min until soft. Add garlic, apple slices, brown sugar (if using), and cook ~8–10 min.
  4. Deglaze and braise: Stir in mustard, pour in beer, and scrape up browned bits. Return brats to pan, nestling them in the onion & apple mixture.
  5. Oven‑braise uncovered for 20–25 min, until sausage internal temp hits 160°F (71°C) and sauce reduces slightly.
  6. Serve hot, topping brats with caramelized onion and apple mixture. Garnish with parsley and pair with rolls, spaetzle, or for an air fryer recipes twist, crisp the sausages lightly before finishing in the oven.

Tips & Variations

  • Swap lager beer for amber or dark beer to deepen the flavor
  • Add sliced red cabbage in last 10 min for a sweet-tart side
  • Finish sausages in an air fryer at 375°F for 3–5 minutes after braising to add pan fried chicken–style crisp to the brat skin

Enjoy !!
